The FTC and the BBB both have issued comments recently urging consumers to protect their digital information in car rentals. The newest vehicles in the car rental industry are exactly the same as the newest vehicles on the market. Most of them offer an infotainment system which offers a USB port which could sync to your phone. With the technology nowadays, the vehicle offers so many neat functions, such as calls and call history, driving history, text messages that it would read out to you. But the biggest issue is all this personal data would be stored on the vehicle and if it is a rental, it would be accessible for the next person to use the vehicle. The BBB urges drivers to avoid connecting your smart phone to the vehicle for charging purposes, and use the lighter plug extension instead. If you do connect your phone to the vehicle, remember to delete your data on the vehicle itself. You can find that information in the owner's manual, or ask someone to show you how at the rental service.
