Car rental services in Oman lose thousands of rials from tourists and business visitors who leave the country with unpaid fines. Nearly half of their customers have cost companies revenue in the form of traffic signal violations, parking and speeding tickets. According to Budget Rent A Car up to 25 percent of the fines are rendered unredeemable. Since fines or parking tickets in the UAE could take up to a year or so before it enters the rental services' system, the tourist or business visitors leave as soon as they return the vehicle. The processing fee, logistics, software and other issues to keep track of these fines is also a major concern. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) is strict about punishing traffic offenders, but the car rental services have to prove to the ROP that the person liable for the fines have left the country, which includes official certificates from immigration authorities which is a major inconvenience in terms of labor and time. Most car rental companies in Oman would like to see an immediate turn around, where fines reflect the same day so they could fine the customer and not be held liable themselves.
