Austin-based Silver is looking to break into the car rental business in Seattle. Silvercar will be launching their services at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport starting on July 31st. They will be opening their fleet with 50 vehicles. All Audi A4s. The company said they were more interested in transporting travelers coming to and from the airport than getting into the business of getting people around town like car2go.
Their services somewhat mirror Zipcar, where there is a designated pickup and drop-off zone. Audi purchased Silvercar earlier this year, following years of partnership and collaboration from the two. The German automaker had previously invested $28 million in the tech company in 2015. Silvercar claims their services "eliminates lines, counters, paperwork, hassles and uncertainty by delivering the entire experience through an easy-to-use mobile app and friendly concierge service."
Customers may reserve their cars in advance via their smartphone app or through the company's website and there is a concierge on site at the airport to help facilitate should an issue arise. However the company requires a minimum reservation of at least two hours long. The company is opening Seattle's rental services at $59 per day.
Silvercar is no stranger to the transportation industry to and from airports. Seattle is not their first city nor will it be their last. The company currently operates at airports in Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York and San Francisco. The company has plans to expand into Orlando this summer. The company plans to double their airport operations by the end of next year. Silvercar also has a few non-airport pick up and drop-off areas in New York City and Miami.
