Didi Chuxing is facing another crisis after another passenger was raped and killed using their service. Rising public criticism and calls for tighter regulations has the company trying to on its heels. This second incident revolves around a 20-year-old woman named Zhao was raped and killed by her Didi driver on Friday. Local police found the driver, 27-year-old Zhong on Saturday and he had confessed to raping and killing Zhao.
Didi released a statement that the company was "immensely saddened by the tragedy." The company also removed two senior managers of its Hitch ride-sharing service from their positions. Many regulators from a number of major cities have also ordered Didi to completely overhaul their management and improve their safety for their passengers. In an open letter titled "Our Deepest Apologies," Didi founder Cheng Wei and President Jean Liu wrote "The tragedy reminded us we have walked this path without enough respect nor humility."
"We see clearly this is because our vanity overtook our original beliefs. We raced non-stop riding on the force of breathless expansion and capital through these few years; but this has no meaning in such a tragic loss of life," The letter has done to litter to subdue the public anger towards the company. Bloomberg reports daily download stats from App Annie showed Didi fell from being the ninth most-downloaded app on the App Store in China on August 20th to 61st place on 29th. The murder took place on the 24th. The previous murder revolved around a 21-year-old flight attendant named Li, who was allegedly murdered by the man who was driving her. The man, a 27 year old named Liu Zhenua, reportedly stole his father's phone to access the app and pick up passengers.
